Help about Database
1. How can user search material property?
Choose find property in drop down list, type in material name or CAS Number, property
name then click search. e.g. Type Water Density to find water density.
The following are tips for property search.
1. You may use + sign to ensure that word must be there. e.g +water +density
search text definitly gives results that must have word water, and density.
2. You may use - sign to ensure that word does not present in searched results.
e.g. water -density search text does not give results that contain word density.
3. You may use quote "" to tread a few words as one word. e.g. "Silicon dioxide"
search text gives much fewer results than search text Silicon dioxide because
Silicon dioxide also gives results from both Silicon, and Dioxide.
4. You may use wilde card if search text word is four character or more and not
in quote " ". e.g. C2H5* search text gives all results that have word begining
with C2H5, such as C2H5OH, C2H5COOH, C2H5D etc.
The results found are listed as table. The user may click property name or material
to go to related web site for more information about method to measure or method to manufacture if there are
links. The user can click "View" button to see more detailed information. The
rank is averaged result given by memebers.
The popularity indicates how much
popular in terms of how many memebers participated
in ranking, and how many members are tracking this property. You may use both rank and popularity to judge the reliability of this property.
2. How can user search constant?
Choose find constant in drop down list, type in constant name, unit
then click search. The searched results are listed as table. The user may click
constant name to find more related information if there is a link.
e.g. Type Light speed km/s in seach text to find light speed in unit km/s. You
may type partial word such as "Ligh km" to find the same results. In this version
of searching engine, the word is not case sensity.
3. How can user add material property?

web site for instrument setup, measurement procedure to follow etc. Input reference
of publication and comment about this material property measurement.
Step 3. Input property value: Click Add data>Material property>Step 3 Property
value. Select property whose value is to be reported in tree view. There are
two methods to add values. Method one is just add property value and dependence,
then click "Add" buuton. This can add value one by one manually. Another method is
is upload text file of property values. The text file has property values in (x,y,precision)
format. Make sure there is no space between number and before any
number. The number can be sperated by comma "," or semicomma ";". The file can contain up to 50 lines for this version. It is going to support long lines later.

1.How can user run make solution calculator?
See example
In main menu Click Popular services>Make solution, then choose concentration,
temperature at which solutionton is to make. Then choose method to add solvent information
from system or add my solvent. If user chooses to add my own solvent, the system
may require molecular weigh and density input depending on unit of solution.
The user may add solute molecular weigh, density depending on unit of solution
. The system gives warning message if required informations are missing.
Click make solution button to next step. The user can input target concentration
and any one of informations: solvent volume, solute mass, solute volume if it is
liquid, or final solution volume expected. Then click calculate button to
get solvent volume, solute mass, volume, solution volume. The system uses
ideal solution model to deal with final solution volume. The user may force solute
volume contribution as zero by inputting 0 at solute volume.
2.How can user run dilute solution calculator?
See example
In main menu Click Popular services>Dilute solution, then choose concentration,
temperature at which solutionton is to make. It is optional to input solvent
and solute information. Adding solvent and solute information can help user
keep record at next step.
Choose method to add solvent information from system or add my solvent. The
user may add solute molecular weigh, density.
Click Dilute solution button to next step. The user can input target concentration,
concentrated solution concentration and any one of informations: solvent volume,
concentrated solution volume, or diluted solution volume. Then click calculate
button to get solvent volume, concentrted solution volume, diluted solution volume.
Currently, the system does not consider solute effect to solution volume.
This is valid for non concentrated solution.
3. How can user calculate pH of any buffer solution?
Example
In main menu Click Popular services>Biotech/chemistry, then click pH buffer calculator.
Then give temperature of the buffer.
Choose initial state as Buffer solution (default). Add no chemical in add
chemical dropdown list (default).
Gives pKa value of the buffer. Then click Next step button to reach calculation
page.
At calculation page, give either concentration ratio of final base vs final
acid, or final concentartion of acid and base, then click calculate button to see
the pH value determined.
4. How can user make pH buffer from acid and base?
Example
In main menu Click Popular services>Biotech/chemistry, then click pH buffer calculator.
Then give temperature of the buffer.
Choose initial state as Buffer base (liquid) (user may choose solid if it is the
case). There are two options of add chemical for this initial state.
They are adding buffer acid, or add chemical to convert base to acid. This usually
is due to chemical reacting with buffer base producing base.
Give pKa value of the buffer. Give MW of the base if it is solid. Give reacting
mole ratio if the reaction consumes base and produces acid. E.g. CH3COONa
can react with H2SO4 solution to produce buffer acid CH3COOH. One mole H2SO4
can react with 2 mole base (it is CH3COONa in this case), and consuming mole ratio
is 2. If it is HCl solution as add chemical, the consume mole ratio is 1.
Then click Next step button to reach calculation page.
Note: The user may choose initial state as acid (liquid or solid), then add corresponding
base to make buffer solution.
At calculation page, give initial concentration of buffer acid and buffer base,
and initial buffer volume if initial state is liquid, or give initial mass of the
base (acid) if it is at solid to allow the system to calculate initial moles. Give
concentration and volume of chemical to add if it is at liquid or mass of the chemical
if the chemical is solid. Click calculate button to obtain pH value, and final
concentrations of acid and base.
5. How can user adjust pH value of buffer solution?
Example
In main menu Click Popular services>Biotech/chemistry, then click pH buffer calculator.

Choose initial state as Liquid buffer solution. There are six options of add
chemical. They are
a. add buffer acid to increase buffer acid concentration,
b. add buffer base to increase buffer base concentration,
c. add chemical to react with acid and produce base to increase base and reduce
acid,
d. add chemical to react with base and produce acid to increase acid and reduce
base.
e. add chemical to react with acid and reduce acid concentration
f. add chemical to react with base and reduce base concentration
Give pKa value of the buffer. Give reacting mole ratio if a reaction is involved
to consume acid or base. E.g. CH3COONa can react with H2SO4 solution to produce
buffer acid CH3COOH. One mole H2SO4 can react with 2 mole base (it is CH3COONa
in this case), and consuming mole ratio is 2. Then click Next step
button to reach calculation page.
At calculation page, give initial concentration of buffer acid and buffer base,
and initial buffer volume. Give concentration and volume of chemical to add
if it is at liquid or mass of the chemical if the chemical is solid. Click
calculate button to obtain pH value, and final concentrations of acid and base.
6. How can user convert concentration unit?Example
In main menu Click Popular services>Biotech/chemistry, then click Convert concentration
in tools. Then choose original concentration unit, target concentration unit,
and give temperature for density calculation.
There are two options to add solvent input. Default is from system. There are over
40 common solvents from system are listed. Click solvent or CAS Number to order
the
list to find the solvent. If you can not find your solvent or you do not want to
use system property, you can add your own solvent MW and density. For some unit
conversion, they are optional.
For solute, user can input MW and density. For some unit conversion, they are optional.
The system is capable to inform you if any required information is missing.
Click next step button to calculation page. Input original concentration and click
calculator button to get concentration value with desired unit. In addition, the
output also has value in units of g/L and mol/L if there is enough input information
given.
